Start Using Sixteenth Note Snares: Learning Through Green Day's Wake Me Up When September Ends

I teach my students Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day because it is a great song to start learning and implementing 16th note snare drums. The beats jump back and forth throughout the song quite frequently keeping the drummer engaged and the fills are straight forward. Basically the fills are is single stroke roles except for the use of two toms right before the bridge where everything else cuts out and there is only singing and the acoustic guitar.

Abby is one of my students that is really doing a great job, and consistently learning and becoming better every week. Here she gives us an example of how the song is played.

Most students usually jump at the chance to play an iconic Green Day song because it is so well known. It is a fun song to teach as well. it's nice for students now days to get a taste of some punch rock with the cymbals being used as hihats. It's loud but fun!

This is a standard song I teach almost every student so if you are thinking of taking lessons or have a son or daughter looking to take lessons you will be able to play this song too!
